  1. (I put the best schools in the area in brackets.)

An article on msnbc says the best ones are:

    Athens, GA [UGA]

    Berkeley, CA [UC Berkeley]

    Boulder, CO [UC Boulder]

    Lawrence, KA [U Kansas]

Madison, WI (I've heard great things about Madison) [U Wisconsin Madison]

    Princeton, NJ [Princeton]

    Another site mentions:

    Chico, CA [Cal State Chico]

    Eugene, OR [U Oregon]

    Claremont, CA [Pomona/Pitzer/Claremont McKenna/Harvey Mudd/Scripps]

Austin, TX (definitely a great place to go to school) [UT Austin]

I've also heard really good things about:

Ann Arbor, MI [U Michigan Ann Arbor]

St. Louis, MO [Wash U St. Louis]

    Nashville, TN [Vanderbilt]

Seattle, WA [U Washington Seattle; Seattle U]

and I also know that Boston, MA (and the area immediately surrounding) [Tufts; Boston College; Boston U; Harvard--close by in Cambridge; MIT--also close by) is a FABULOUS college town. Northampton, MA [Smith] is fun if you want something a little smaller/funkier.

  2. University of Nebraska at Lincoln

  3. University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. Everything is in walking or bike riding distance. It's a big city with a small town charm. The campus is close to downtown. And if you don't feel like walking or riding your bike there are buses that will take you all over the city.

  4. Bloomington, Indiana, where IU is at.  It's hilly around the town, but the town is good for walking, biking, etc.  The town isn't really big but there's LOTS of stuff to do there.

  5. UC Davis is a great biking town, as is UC Santa Barbara.  I would say Chapel Hill (UNC) is good as well.  Those are the ones I know that fit your criteria.

  6. East Lansing

Near by university: Michigan State University

Near by major community college: Lansing Community College
