Keep everyone out of your home that you are suspicious of. Know your visitors.  I won't let anyone in that is not a close friend.

What are you securing? A dog makes a great cheap security system for you and your home. A chair up against the door handle makes a good system for securing a room. Thorny bushes growing under a window...etc...

You can buy a sign that indicates that you have a security system, even if you don't.
