besides a stock broker. I don't like the salesman side of being a stockbroker but I love the stock market and aspire to be a student of the market. I want a job dealing with stocks so that I can learn and work at the same time so that my little side investment can benefit from this combination.

  1. sorry, i've got some bad news for you.

if you are in any sort of valuation or sales capacity, you probably won't be able to have that little side project - at least not for the sectors that you cover.

on the bright side though, you will be able to go to college and major in finance for the next few years, which means that you get to ride out the current market cycle while still hibernating in school. (i assume you're in middle or high school, because otherwise you would just be asking your academic advisers or professors).

a position in equity research may interest you, but you would probably have to pay some dues first.  if you're lucky, you might land a front office job, but there are (unfortunately) many more back office jobs than front office ones.

but even looking optimistically (yes, on to the bad news again), even if you land a front office, ER position for a buy-side office - even if you will be supporting a prop desk - you will still be a salesman.  everyone on wall street is.  if you're that set against being a salesman, either grow some brass balls (per Alec Baldwin), or reconsider your career path.
