  1. just major in math.

  2. Hold on a second. Any slight inkling of an idea what you want to do after college? Ok, I'll assume not.

So, before you dive into doing a technical major, think about this.

Most kids avoid majoring in a liberal arts major because they wouldn't know what to do with it after college. Archaeology? Philosophy? Sociology? Art History? Don't fall into that trap. Most of the people I know who are articulate, write well, and come up with more creative (out of the box) ideas majored in liberal arts, even though they now work in say Finance, Marketing, or Web 2.0 internet startups. Why? I honestly think it's because those 4 years in a liberal arts major really helped with your writing skills, your ability to think about things from many different angles, and not being taught to learn that there is one only one answer to everything (opposite than say engineering where you get only one answer). Moreover, there are a ton of smart kids in India and China who can do all the straightforward technical jobs. The best jobs in the US are ones where you can speak and present well, come up with the big and creative ideas, and socialize well. Of course, you need to work well and produce results too, but thats a given.

If you choose a Technical major, make sure you can handle the hundreds of hours of doing problem sets, of dealing with math, and hanging constantly around all the geekier and book-smart type people. You're definitely going to be challenged more so than those in liberal arts majors in my opinion, so getting a B in an engineering class is most likely harder than getting a B in a psychology class. You'll have gone through a much more rigorous 4 years of college, but if you make it out and with good grades, you're also a stud. But again, it's much tougher and you need to be able to handle it.

  3. Math, you need physics for engineering...
