  1. I started out with traditional tye-quan-do, have my 2nd degree black belt in it. Personally it's fun to do, but not effective at loosing weight or on the streets.

I suggest what I have gotten myself into now, MMA, or mixed martial arts. I am apart of Pro Star, which is an MMA group, there are about 20-30 schools total. If you get yourself into mixed martial arts, it works everything. You know more what to do if your attacked on the street or sparring with somebody else. Most MMA out there is ground and stand up fighting. If you watch UFC, Ultimate Fighting Contest, that is pretty much MMA, and MMA known as the modern martial arts.

  2. id get into something more cardiovascular...like boxing/kickboxing/muay thai/krav maga ....the intense workouts will help you lose weight.

id probably recommend boxing to start...if there is a gym near you.

find out whats near you first....decide second.

  3. This may be of help:

  4. One that you feel confident and comfortable using and can adapt to ( As not everyone can ).

    Best wishes :)***

  5. u can try Muay Thai. Judo or Jujitsu are also good options.

  6. It's spelled Aikido. Aikido is a very defensive martial art. You will throw the opponent away.... that's about it. I've taken Aikido and it's very good, but I use it in unison with many other martial arts. With Judo the objective is to throw them to the ground and subdue the opponent with an arm bar, choke, strangle, etc. From my experience Judo is a little bit rougher on the uke than Aikido.

  7. yeah just go do akido if you like it continue with it otherwise move to another amrtial art and keep going to different martial arts till you find one you like

you can do any martial art you want they wont kick you out for being overweight.

  8. I would seriously consider whether I wanted to follow xranthoi's suggestions, seeing as how he is a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and cannot even spell it right. Go away poser.

    As for your question:

Any martial art will help you lose weight, if you train it hard. Realize that to get good requires training what you learn in class at home. More Physical activity=more calories burned.

Unlike most of the people who answer here I am not going to recomend a specific style. They do because it is what they take, or what is predominant in the UFC, which is all that many people who don't train know about.

Any of the styles mentioned are good if taught and trained right. I myself prefer Okinawin karate, because it has a good mix of stuff, but that is just me, and I was lucky to start out in the best school around.

Here is what I would do:

    1) Make a list of all of the schools and classes availible in your area.(that's the problem with people recomending styles, not everything is taught everywhere)

    2) Go here www.bulshido.com. They have an excellent list on what to avoid and what to look for in a good school, regardless of style. You could also do a search on here, as there are many good questions and answers about finding a good school.

    3) Visit all of the schools/styles that have an interest to you and watch a few classes, and maybe even participate if they have free trial classes.

    4) Figure out which school is the best according to the list you have, and the questions you will ask of the instructor.

When will people realize that a style cannot defend you. nor can it make you lose weight. You are the one that defends you using the style(s), and you are the one that needs to work hard to take the weight off.

If you are not willing to do the research and put the time in, chances are that you will not stick with any style anyway.

I wish you luck, and hope you do well. I know martial arts changed my life for the better.

  9. Stay away from Grappling and Kicking, if you have a lot of fat, you're not extremely flexible (sorry if that's harsh, you have the best factor for martial arts though, a thirst for knowledge) Go with Wing Tsun if you can find it, it has a lot of reversal techniques and speed. Taiji is also surprisingly great, it also has a lot of reversals and power (no joke, my sifu is a master) good luck, I don't know much bout Aikido, but I hope that helps.

  10. I like Judo

  11. I took Tae Kwon Do. Wasn't as much takedowns.

My cousin took Akido. I learned a lot from him.

    Take Akido.
