  1. In my opinion, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, etc. are a waste of time and money. They are not smart. They basically just chew through whatever cage you have and then go missing. A great pet that I had in college is a ferret. They are rather expensive ($109 - $139) but well worth it. They can live up to ten years and they can learn tricks like a dog. They are the number 3 rated best pet (after dog and cat). All ferrets have different personalities. I had two in college. My girl was smaller and LOVED socks and flip-flops (each ferret has their own obsession). If I ever left a sock or flip-flop in the middle of the room, she would drag it under the bed immediately. It was so hilarious and cute. My boy was a fatso! All he did was eat and sleep. He loved to cuddle. I know it's weird but my female ferret loved to sleep in the bed with me. Every ferret you will buy is neutered/spayed and descented (they are apart of the skunk, otter, & beaver family). They can take a lot of maintenance but will use a litter box if trained properly just like any other animal. You can sometimes find ferrets for adoption on cragislist for a reasonable price. Also, check out you tube for funny and cute ferret videos. There is a movie called Along Came Polly featuring Jennifer Anniston and Ben Stiller where she had a ferret. If a ferret is not what you are looking for, my best advice would be to adopt a smaller dog from an animal shelter. I adopted my chihuahua from an animal shelter for $75 (includes shots, & neuter/spay). You can't go any better way. It is cheap and you are saving an innocent animals life. I will never buy a dog from a breeder again.

  4. LOL your going to think i am nuts but i used to have pet rats they make excellent pets. they will sit on your shoulder and do tricks if you teach them. if you on a budget they can eat cat or dog food or table scraps however it is best if you get store bought rodent food that dose not contain pellets because they wont eat them... One of my rats would get so happy when i came home that she would do back flips in her cadge... i also had one who learned how to get out of her cadge so make sure your cadge is secure luckily she would only go to the window when she got out she liked to sit and watch the cars go past. they make great friends and great pets. as long as the cadge is kept clean they don't smell at all and they are usually pretty quiet... hope that helps... oh and for bedding i always used shreadded papper of lined the bottom with news paper...

  5. Most colleges don't allow pets in their dorms, apartments, or any other housing on-campus. I would not get your college student any pet if they're going to be living on-campus.

They won't have time to take care of it adequately--especially if this is their first semester in college and/or away from home.

  6. Many dorms dont allow more than a small fish tank.

I think the college student needs to get settled in first, figure out what kind of time he/she has to care for a pet.. and find out what they are allowed to have in the dorms.
