  1. go on www.ultimate-guitar.com and search 10-hour workout, the Steve vai one, do that religiously and you will see improvement...

  2. I have a little exercise I give my students. These are all done on the high E string.

Put your first finger on the 4th fret; second finger on the 5th fret; third finger on the 6th fret and little finger on the 7th fret.  Then pick the string... lift the little finger and pick again... lift the third finger and pick again and then lift the second finger and pick again... then REPEAT IT, but in reverse, so pick then put the second finger on the string and pick again... etc... this will get your brain working on  a simple sequential picking exercise... once you master it on the high E then move up to the B string, etc.

This is a lot harder than it sounds, but it works well to get the brain and fingers working together.

  3. Get the Christapher Parkening book 1 there is alot of stuff there if you can read notes if you can't read notes then, find a teacher is the best thing to do.
