  1. "on my own" from Les Miserables.  It is a nice piece with lots of chances for you to shine.  It also has a real simple piano part.  Not to mention it is very romantic giving you the chance to show expression and impress a director.

  2. definately depends on what the tryout is for, also what are your musical strengths, you dont want to do a song and not not it sound great, pick a song that you also know you sing well and one that really brings out your voice....

  3. depends on what your trying out for. let's say showboat, then show tunes or a song featured in showboat would be good. or let's say cats , then a song featured in cats would be good, and so on.

  4. I 'm thinking of something romantic

    - Whistle Down The Wind

    - Any Dream Will Do (Joseph and the [...] Dreamcoat)

    Or exciting:

    - Buenos Aires (Evita)

  5. well some times it depend on the musical here are some good songs though

shy from once apon a matress, ill know from guys and dolls, he needs me from oliver, fame from fame, roxie from chicargo, all that jazz from chicargo, segments from defiying gravity from wicked, i'm not that girl from wicked, **** eyed optimist from south pacific, no good deed from wicked. well it really depends on which musical your trying for so try these hope they help you

  6. It totally depends on what you're auditioning for - you should pick a song in a similar style - by the same composer from a different show, if you can manage it.  Avoid shows which are popular or big on Broadway at the moment - so Wicked, Hairspray, Legally Blonde, Phantom, RENT, Les Mis (particularly "On My Own") and Grease are not good options, as songs from those shows are overdone and you won't stand out from the crowd.  Find something which suits your voice and which you like.

  7. It's important to pick a song that isn't overused in auditions.  My favorite show to audition from is Jekyll & Hyde - it was super popular a few years ago, so the songs are recognizable but not so trendy that fifteen people will be singing the same piece at your audition.  If you've got a big, belty voice, try one of the Linda Eder songs like "A New Life" or "Good and Evil."  If you're more of a soprano, try "In His Eyes" or "Once Upon a Dream."

More on Jekyll and Hyde, my personal favorite:

  8. There are a lot of songs from Thoroughly Modern Millie that are good for auditions.  Also, try Footloose. The songs are up beat and fun.

  9. Depends on you're vocal strengths.

However, I wouldn't sing anything from "Les Mis" (on my own, i dreamed a dream ect.) ANYTHING from "Hairspray" "Footloose" "Rent" "Phantom of the Opera" or "Wicked" "Legally Blonde"  ect.

Though they have good songs, directors get easily bored by them. I once went to an audition where 5 girls sang "On My Own" and 17 sang "Good Morning Baltimore"

**Also, though Sondheim is a fatastic composer, for an audition piece, anything from Into the Woods, Sweeny Todd, Sunday in the Park w George ect. can be difficult to play because of his style.

    Try some songs from

-Jesus Christ Superstar ( there's a good rock ballad I Don't know how to love him)

-Thoroughly Modern Mille (there's alot of songs to choose, I love Not For the Life of Me-It's a Fun Belty song)

-Camelot (Simple Joys of maidenhood is a great charactery piece)

-Jospeh and the Amazing Tech. Dreamcoat ( Jacob and sons has a good 16 bars )

-Bauty and the Beast (home is a really pretty song)

Godspelll has some funky pieces (O less the Lord My Soul is a really powerful soulfull song that gets pretty high towards the end)

-Evita ( Don't cry for me Argentina)

    - Flower drum song

-Fiddler on the roof (Far from the home I Love)

-Cinderella (My own little corner and step sisters lament are both fun songs.)

There are soo many choices out there, be careful you dont sing something the director has probablly heard one hundred songs, because then they'll either forget your performance, or compare you to everyone elsoe who sang that same song. Those other Shows have Great songs for showcases, just be careful- you want your performance to stand out- and A song not too overly done that shows off your strengths will be the best bet.

Oh, and make sure the songs is in a similar style to the show you're auditioning for.

You wouldn't want to sing a rock ballad for The Sound of Music.

    Hope this helps :)

Be confident, and break a leg!
