  1. Happy anniversary!

There are a lot of good steak restaurants in the D.C. area you and your girlfriend could go to for your anniversary.  Since I don't know your situation, I'm going to make a couple of assumptions in order to answer your question.

    1.  Since you're asking online for a good steak house, I going to assume that you don't go out to expensive restaurants too much.  2.  I saw that you had asked a math question two years ago on this site, so I'll assume you're pretty young -- late teens or early twenties.

With that in mind, when I was 22 yrs. old, I took my girlfriend (now my wife) out to a French restaurant for our anniversary.  At the time, I hadn't been to many fancy places either, so it was a little intimidating.  The menu with items I couldn't pronounce, a lot of older people in suits, and a ridiculously long list of wines.

Luckily for us, we got a great waiter.  He was an older guy -- like my grandfather's age, but he didn't disrespect us at all.  In fact, he was more attentive when I told him it was our first time at that restaurant.  He suggested a good wine that was fairly cheap and helped us with the menu without any attitude.  He really made us feel comfortable, and because of that, we had a great experience.  We did spend a lot of money, but after 17 years, we still talk about that dinner as the best dinner/service  we've ever had.  It was worth it.

Excluding Outback, any of the steak houses mentioned by others are good, but for your anniversary dinner, I think you should go to a place that also has an upscale ambiance.  Most upscale restaurants train their staff well, so you should get a waiter who will treat you well.  Morton's, Ruth Chris', and Capital Grille are all good choice, but I suggest a place called Prime Rib on K Street.  Prime Rib has a dress-code and might have slightly nicer atmosphere for an anniversary dinner than the other steak houses, which have more of a feel where business and political guys go to stroke each other's ego.

Wherever you decide to go, valet park your car.  It's nice to start off your dinner without having to circle around looking for parking, and it only cost around $10.  It's worth it.  Let your waiter know that this is your first time at the restaurant and that you're there because it's your anniversary.  In fact, when you make your reservation, let them know it's an anniversary dinner and you'ld like a nice table.  They will pay special attention to you.  If you are old enough to drink and want to get wine, get the house wine.  All these steak houses will have nice wine as their house wine.  It's a little cheaper and tends to be the best deal.  Order either a salad, soup or an appetizer -- not all three.  You'll just be too full to enjoy the steak.  For the entree, don't feel like you have order a steak.  Even though they are steak houses, they offer a lot of other items that are very good too.  Order one steak and one chicken or fish.  They're cheaper and you can share with your girlfriend.  Don't get too many sides.  Just a couple will do and share them (they're large).  Make sure you get a dessert.  Many women love dessert and steak houses tend to have pretty good desserts.  Just get one and share it.  It will be plenty.  Leave between 15 and 20% tip, closer to 20%, and if you want to go for a walk before getting your car, just let them know you want to go for a short walk.  It will be ok.

If you prefer, you could go to another place for dessert.  It will be a change of scenery and will give you guys a chance to talk about your steak house experience freely.  There is a TGIF only a couple of blocks from the Prime Rib.  It's nice to go some place where you might feel more comfortable to finish off the evening.

    Happy anniversary again.

  2. In Arlington there is Ray's Steak's on Wilson.  Better than Ruth Chris's or any of the high end chains.  Great cuts of meat with an affordable wine list.  Key is they don't push the ambiance of linens and such so they have kept their costs down.  The place is not romantic but great!

  3. Capitol Grille in D.C. has the most incredible steak you will ever taste. And, their service is unmatched in the city. It's right off of Pennsylvania on the north west side.

Also Smith and Wollinsky's is known for their steak in D.C. and they are not a chain. Either one of these will be an incredible experience.

  4. Ruth's Chris, DEFINETLY.

  5. Outback Steakhouse in Arlington.  It's in a little shopping center off Route 50, but there are trees between the highway and the shopping center.

  6. Ruth's Chris is delicious but quite expensive.  There is probably also a Morton's near there.

  7. If you are hankerin for a REAL steak dinner and you are prepared to drop some serious coin...then Ruth's Chris or Morton's, and JR's Stockyards are in Tysons (about as close to Manassas as you'll get).  As the other writer said...Ray's the Steak's always blows them away with a great steak and prices too, however, it's sparse on the ambiance.

Ray's is always voted "best" in the area.  Frankly, my favorite for the money and meal is Mike's (the guys who brought you Silverado, Coastal Flats and Arties, Carlysle, etc.) but they are in Springfield.

By the way...Outback ain't a steakhouse....if you really believe that, you've never eaten at a real steak house.

    Hope this helps!

  8. JR's stockyards in Tysons

or Texas de Brazil in the Fair Oaks Mall is a great steak restaurant with good service and a romantic atmosphere.

    Happy Anniversary!
