  1. I believe the current World Record is 1.41, but hey, you're 17 and still have a good few years of running in you yet.

I know you're Irish rather than British, but if I read it right UK Athletics think you'd be an Olympic Finalist were you to get that time down to under 1:48.  See the attached.  That's for 21-29 year olds too; have a read of what it says at the bottom of the 800m graph.

You've got some real talent there, keep working and you could make some serious headlines in four years time.

To answer your question what time can I do, I managed 2:34 when I was 15 competing at a club level.  I was a 400m runner, and I stepped up to 800m to cover an injury.  It was the only time I competed at that distance.  Last night, as a 38 year old I did 3:02 on a treadmill.  On the track I'd expect to do about 2:40, but no better than that.

  2. The London Schools record for the 880 yards (that's about 804 metres) is 1:52.2.  That was me, aged 17 in 1964 at White City.  And it's my record for ever unless they bring back Imperial distances.

1:56 out of competition is good.  Join an athletics club and get some coaching, and they'll knock a couple of seconds off that.  Keep training and lay off the booze and women and we'll see you in 2012.

  3. Thats a great time.  I ran 204 when i was 17.  Anything sub 2 is good in high school.  I saw a kid at states run a 1:52 in Pennsylvania.  Keep working!

  4. 1:56 is a very good time for a 17 year old.

  5. thats a good time a kidby us whos going to college next year ran a 1:53. so maybe you'll be able to bring that time down a couple of seconds next year. good luck

  6. thats a good time

  7. Yes join a club and find out about competition opportunities. There will be local, and international ones like World Juniors etc. Don't be scared about running against seniors as they can help you run faster.

Pretty good time, but to aim to be the best. It has been a while since there has been a good Irish middle distance runner.

You would be in the top 10 for your age in New Zealand, but around 1.52 to be a really good runner.

    Good luck

  8. thats really good keep at it!!
