I've raised shepherds before. They are great guard dogs naturally without any training. It is in their nature to protect their owners and are very loyal to them in that way.

I don't believe that ANYONE should raise a shepherd to attack on command unless they themselves have the proper credentials and intent to do so (e.g, police officer). This is because, although shepherds are generally loyal and protective, there is a slight chance that you might train your dog to grow aggressive by teaching them to attack on command. Unless you are an EXPERIENCED german shepherd trainer, I would urge you not to train them to be "attack dogs" because of the risks involved.

Shepherds are loyal companions who aim to protect you and your family from harm naturally. They know to do this on instinct. Any further training on attack might change that demeanor and if you can not handle that, your dog may be a danger. Shepherds know the difference between intruders and loved ones (usually) and I reiterate that they will protect you on instinct.

You don't want your shepherd to bite. period. they already have a bad reputation as it is. Besides a GSD is a naturally protective dog. They don't need "training" for it. Barking is enough to keep people away and if needed your dog will protect you.
