  1. Chelsea is pretty close to Ann Arbor (25 min drive).  You could go to a play at the Purple Rose Theater and then have dinner at The Common Grill.  The parking is convenient and it is nice to walk around a small town.  Their downtown area is small but pretty.

  2. AJinAZ has a good suggestion with Chelsea... but why leave Ann Arbor when you don't have to? Save Common Grill for the second or third date (or later...)

For a show, I'd suggest either the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase, located on Liberty, or perhaps a show at the Ark. You should also look into performances at the University of Michigan (Power Center, Hill Auditorium, etc.) -- I've listed a couple links below.

For dinner, almost any place on Main Street is a great choice. Prickly Pear is a great cozy place full of great Southwestern food.  Next door is Gratzi which has great northern Italian food, though it is a little pricey. Palio and Seafood company across the street are good. But don't discount more bar-type restaurants like Grizzly Peak or Arbor Brewing Company.

Honestly, I would suggest going for drinks & dinner and then having coffee or going for dessert -- or just walking around downtown Ann Arbor (but be careful to dart into shops or bookstores -- it's cold this time of year!).  The most important thing on a first date is CONVERSATION and getting to know each other -- it's hard to talk if you're watching a comedy show or musician.

For my first date with my wife (going on 2+ years of marriage  now - we dated for a few years as well), I took her for drinks at Dominick's near the Law School followed by dinner at Red Hawk on State Street.  Then, we walked through Central Campus and back home where we just talked until about 3am!  In fact, we hit it off so well that we went out the next night as well!!

So have fun and enjoy the Ann Arbor nightlife!!   ;)
