  1. Police retire their bikes at 70K miles.

I wouldn't buy a gixxer that had more than 20K miles on it.

  2. j*p bikes typically will not last more than 25,000 - 50,000 miles. Both Twin cam Harley's I have owned has had over 60,000 miles on it  with no signs of trouble. The new Harley's are designed to last over 100,000 miles before any rebuild is needed. This is a basic rule and will depend on how much you rag a bike also.

  3. I honestly do not know.

If you keep up with maintenance, it will run fine indefinitely.

You have to find the point where maintenance is not yielding results comparable to what you are spending.

I have not found that point yet.  I am currently getting a 1978 Honda CB400 Automatic, back in shape.  30 years old. It runs fine, gas mileage is still high, 55 to 60 MPG.  A pair of tires(dry rot, not wear), and I expected to replace the chain.  Not necessary, nor the sprockets, and it seems to be original.  If it had been ridden regularly, the tires would have worn down and been replaced.  Maybe the chain and sprockets, too. Doesn't happen.  I just changed sparkplugs, to the new Iridium plugs.  The thing that shortened the life of plugs, before, when it was new, was lead.  Now we are using unleaded fuel and all the cars have gone to platinum plugs with a life of 100,000 miles.

The usual end to a motorcycle is a wreck, and the book value of the bike is exceeded by the repairs. So when will it wear out?  I do not have the faintest idea.  Simply none,  I'll probablt take it to the junk yard when the front fork seals go out, or the CDI unit fails.  Or maybe the alternator stator. (A unique part, it is different from the basic Hawk electrics)  I have seen a new maker start making voltage regulators / charging circuitry.  I guess I'd like to have a bit more power, currently it makes 27 HP, a bit less than a good running 250cc with standard shift.

But it runs fine, as it is. I guess Honda was not interested in selling Autos bikes, because the standard Hawk made 40 HP, so they lost one third, in making it automatic. People resnted paying for a 400 and getting eaten bty 250s.  All the optional add ons, are no longer available (I have a rear rack, but not a trunk and it is essential to me).

  4. For a cruiser, V-twin...50,000..

For a Crotch Rocket..15,000 is getting there...20,000 is quite a few miles and I wouldn't buy one with over that unless I was getting a GREAT deal!!!

I have a Yamaha YZF 1000R, it has 16,000 and I baby it, but those motors are making SERIOUS torque and HP... you wouldn't expect to get 100,000 miles out of a 69 Camaro pushing 800 HP right? Same goes for sport bikes.

My bike could probably definatley use cams, cam chain, maybe rings...  remember, these things redline at 11-12,000 RPM, you know what kind of valve spring tension you need to be able to close a valve on a four cylinder in time @ 12,000 RPM's?

But anyway, 15,000 on a bike that has been owned by a 22 year old is a lot, and 20,000 for an adult owned and babied rocket is a lot.

  5. Harley Davidson,  5000 to 8000 miles

    Honda,  25,000 to 40,000 miles

    Yamaha, 20,000 to 35,000 miles

    Suzuki , 10,000 to 20,000 miles

    Kawasaki, 8000 to 12,000 miles

    Vento, 200 miles

49cc pocket bike, 8 to 10 miles or 6 hours of run time

  6. It's not the hours  or miles that put wear and tear on a bike .If a bike is well maintained ,it can go for several hundred thousand miles. I know of a goldwing with over 400,000 on it. I've also seen several bikes that were trashed at 10,000.a bike that is highway driven can have a lot of miles and have like new brakes on bald tires. an '04 gixxer that has been well maintained with 30,000 miles will be in better shape then a stunt bike with 1000 miles. My insurance company figures 20,000 mile a year is average. With gas at $4+ a gallon that will probably go up.

  7. Since HD came out with the Evo and the twin cam engine, they will probably last as long as most auto engines.  Joe B doesn't really know anything, he just likes to bash HDs because he doesn't have one.
