  2. Its a 3 digit number that defines what area you are calling. Every area has a different code. You usually only need in when dialing long distance 1 + area code + phone number but where I live you always have to dial area code + number now.

  4. Really?  The first 3 numbers prior to the full 7 digit phone number.  There is more info in the front of any phone book.

  5. The area code denotes where the phone companies switchboard should direct your call. For example, you're in California, you call someone in New York, you type in the New York area code so your phone company connects your phone to a switch panel in New York. Then it finds the actual phone you are trying to call by finding the number itself (after the area code).

    tl;dr: Area code tells the phone what area of the country you're trying to call.
