  1. John Hancock is another word for signature. John Hancock's signature is famous on the Declaration of Independence because he signed really big and was the first to sign it. That's when people began using his name as another word for signature.

  2. A 'John Hancock' is your signature.

John Hancock was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence. So when someone says "put your John Hancock on here" they are referring to you putting your signature on the paper.

It is a very old cliche that has stood the test of time.

    History:

John Hancock (January 23, 1737 [O.S. January 12, 1736] – October 8, 1793) was a Massachusetts merchant and prominent patriot of the American Revolution. He served as President of the Second Continental Congress and was the first Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but is most famous for his prominent signature on the United States Declaration of Independence.

  7. When John Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence he signed his name very large so that the King of England could see it without his glasses. That is the origin of the phrase./
