I'm going to one soon, but I have no idea what it is. I'm riding english currently, but I haven't started jumping. Are the shows only for jumping?

  1. It's just a relaxed show for newer horses or riders.  While nicer safe clothes are required full show outfits usually aren't.  Your judge is more likely to explain things and answer questions.  They'll be more excepting of the little disturbances that may come up, you should also be on the watch as you ride for any horses who might be preparing to act up.  They should have all the flat riding classes the ones that are only jumping should say so clearly.  It's a good chance to get the experience and watch others without the stress.  And you don't need to braid and shine your horse either Which is why many schooling shows are in late winter before everyone's shedded out and the riders can have warm comfy clothes while preparing the the real show season.  Good luck and have fun.

  2. Schooling shows are simply for "schooling" which means people who are learning to ride/show or green horses are welcome.  They have western schooling shows and english schooling shows.  English shows they have both flat classes and jumping classes.  The jumping never goes higher than 3' at these shows.  Check the class list to see what classes you can enter at the flat.  Usually the flat classes offered are Equitation which is judged on how well you ride and your position in the saddle.  They also have pleasure where its judged on the horse and if the horse is a pleasure to ride.  All of these or done on the flat.

    Good Luck!

  3. A schooling show is exactly like any normal bigger show.  You have all the classes that a normal show would have... probably from ground poles to 3ft or 3'6" and it will have flats for each.  Schooling just means training...  it gives you and your horse the experience of leaving your barn, going to a show.  It's so that you know how your horse will behave in that situation with jumping around a course in an unfamiliar place and flatting with a group of unfamiliar horses who are faced with the same experience as you...  so even if your horse is behaving fine, it gives you the opportunity to see how other horses react and how your horse will behave around other nervous horses.  And you get judged so you know how you're doing too.  It's just a normal horse show, but without the pressure of having tough competition and needing to do well.

    Good luck and have fun!
