  1. a japanese breakfast doesn't really stray away from a japanese lunch and dinner they dont eat traditional breakfast meals like we would here in america. Although western tradition and even cereal are becoming popular in japan mostly with the younger crowds.

it's usually rice, seafood, and some kind of fermented food and maybe even miso soup.

  2. Natto?  Must have stayed in/near Tokyo...  Even most Japanese don't like natto, unless they're from Tokyo.

Anyways, the traditional breakfast is a bowl of rice, a bowl of miso soup (with tofu and seaweed) some fresh pickled vegetables, and a fish.

Of course, there isn't always time for tradition...  The host family I stayed with usually just gulped down a piece of toast and some coffee (or juice for the kids) before running out the door.

Compare this to the so-called traditional American breakfast of toast, eggs, bacon/sasuage, and cereal vs. the donut, bagel and/or cup of coffee most of us grab on the way to work.

  3. Usually a traditional/formal Japanese breakfast consits of rice, miso soup, grilled fish, tamagoyaki, a couple of nori sheets, umeboshi or other kinds of pickles, and natto.

My dad loves traditional Japanese breakfast. So when I lived with my parents, my mom almost always made traditional Japanese breakfast except for Sunday. On Sunday, she wanted to sleep in even though she got up like 7 and made potato salada from scratch and toasts and tea.

But of course, it takes time to make the kind of meal so she always got up at 5. And some family who doesn't like to get up early or some wives who we say are so lazy just make a  western style breakfast that contains toasts, coffee or orange juice or tea, sunny side eggs, salad, and a couple of sausages, or just cereal. We think that people who eat cereal in the morning are extreamely lazy. But these days, many young couples love to have a western style breakfast because it's much easier to make and also they can sleep more. And some Japanese women who don't like to cook breakfast just eat cereal bars. Anyway, we are kinda westernized these days. But still some people get up early and make a traditional Japanese breakfast.

By the way, my dad is from Kumamoto which is southwest side of Japan and he loves natto. And I'm from Chiba which is next to Tokyo and I love natto. And my friend from Iwate which is north of Japan loves to eat Natto for breakfast. I mean it's so normal to have Natto for breakfast. The reason is that people don't need to cook natto for breakfast, but just open the natto container and dump natto into a bowl with raw eggs and soy sauce and mustard and just mix them together. But people who don't like natto don't eat natto for breakfast. My brother doesn't like natto so he didn't eat natto.

Some person mentioned that people in or near Tokyo only eat natto for breakfast but that's wrong. People in everywhere in Japan do eat Natto for breakfast. That's very normal. But if people don't like to eat natto, they just don't eat it.

Well, in Japan, we usually think that people in Kansai area don't like to eat natto for breakfast. And we actually have so many people who try to find out that's true or not  and found that people in Kansai area do eat natto for breakfast. But people who don't like natto just don't eat natto for breakfast because they just don't like the smell. Well, people  in Kansai area usually can't stand the smell because it's too stinky. That's why less people eat natto for breakfast in Kansai area. But that doesn't mean that Kansai people don't eat natto. Actually the smell of natto sold in Kansai area is usually milder than that of natto sold in Kanto area.

Anyway, it's very normal to eat natto for breakfast everywhere in Japan.

  4. When I lived there I ate natto  a lot for breakfast. Natto (fermented beans) with raw quail's egg and raw tuna. Very good.
