The most popular lens it the 18-55 mm.  It is a good general purpose lens to start with.

All your lenses need a UV filter to protect the front element of your lens from damage.  Better to replace a $25 filter than have to spend $150 to $250 to repair a lens

Yes by all means.I purchased 1 at Ritz  and only paid $15 for it because I had damaged the one I had on my lens already.  Thank good it wasn't the lens.  Better safe than sorry

a uv filter is designed to block uv light you do not need one but some people use them to protect the front element of the lens in harsh enviorments sand water ect. better to scratch a 20 dollar filter than a 1000 dollar lens

type of lens to buy depends on how much you can afford to pay and what kind of photography you want to do. need more info
