  1. A working title is the phrase given to the name of a product or production that is still in the making.

For example the latest bond films working title was 'bond 23' until its official title was released, 'Quantum of Solace'

this working title is often used because either they dont know what the product or production is to be called yet or they want to keep it a secret.

  2. It's a temporary title given to something that will be changed later on.

They do it with movies a lot.

  3. if your writing a paper, you give a title on the first draft.  As you write the paper it may take a different focus, so you change the title.

  4. A title that's used while the artwork/music/movie is being worked on.

  5. While something is "in production", like a tv show, movie, etc, it's the title used to describe it.  After it's produced, when it's actually being advertised and shown, the REAL title is decided on (usually by marketing gurus).

As an example, The Dark Knight, had several titles before the "real one" was picked:

Batman Begins 2 (USA) (working title)

Batman: The Dark Knight (USA) (informal title)

Rory's First Kiss (USA) (fake working title)

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience (USA) (IMAX version)

Untitled Batman Begins Sequel (USA) (working title)

Winter Green (USA) (fake working title)

  6. its when your writing and you dont have a title for the piece of work yet
