Whats abroad mean? I have a friend studying this?

I have a friend studying this. What is it? All I know is that he left this country to study this thing.

Can someone explain to me what abroad is and how it serves a purpose.

  1. In general, study abroad means taking your studying in someplace else besides your own homeplace -- most likely a foreign country. Its actually a program where they help students to learn from different cultural backgrounds -- and helps when trying to learn a foreign language, as well. ^_^

  5. LOL.   Going to study "abroad" means going to study overseas or in another country.

    Unless you come from my old neighborhood in The Bronx.   Some of those guys used to study "a broad" constantly.  The same one too.

  6. studying abroad is the term used to say that a student is going to a different country for a certain period of time (usually a semester. maybe a year) to study at a university at the school.

    people usually do it because its one of the few times they'll get to travel in their life. once you're out of college you need to find a job and never have the chance to go to a different country to learn the culture and sight see. most do it for the experience just to go somewhere different. also, you get credits for it in school. it may look good on a resume too, especially if you're an international affairs or history major for example.

  17. Like all the other said, it's in another country.  The purpose it serves is to give the person more experience with different cultures and customs.  When they come back they *should* have a better understanding of how people communicate and work together best.
