  1. San Diego is a fabulous city with lot's of great hotels some on or near the beach or some cool areas, but they are not necessarily resorts. How much time are you planning on staying in your room? or on the hotel grounds? Find a nice hotel and save the resort for when you're in a city that has nothing to offer. San Diego is full of great restaurants and beaches that will surpass anything a resort can offer.

Hotel Circle is close to everything and affordable.

  2. There are lots of nice places to stay in San Diego.  The problem is that most really raise their rates for July and August.  I would check out the rates online on a site such as http://www.kayak.com.  This site checks out many different sites for the best rates.

Then I would go to the websites of 4 or 5 places you'd like to stay.  See what kinds of specials or discounts they might have online.  Then call and tell them your looking for the best rate possible.  If you work for a city, county, state, or federal government you can qualify for the government rate.  Just bring a recent paystub for proof.  AAA, Entertainment Card, and AARP are other possible discounts.  Many times I get the best rate by calling the hotel directly.

I stayed at Hilton San Diego Resort in Mission Bay for only $120 a night in April using the government discount.  Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla often has good deals.  Regular rate was much higher.

    Good luck!
