    example:

    Bob and Tim worked simultaneously on the problem to get a solution. They both started and stopped at the same time.

    You could say they started at separate times but I think haphazard fits better because of all the uncertainty it implies.

    You can be in separate rooms but start working on a problem simultaneously... you would never say they slept in simultaneous rooms.

    Simultaneous gives you the impression you are in sync. Haphazard is when you are totally out of sync.
