  1. Some people also use the term for the player that plays "opposite" the setter in a 5-1.

    Common positions are:

Setter-player that sets the hitters, quarterback of the team

Left side, power or strong side hitter-3 terms for the same player

Right side, weak side or opposite-again 3 terms for the same player

    Middle

Defensive specialist-only plays back row, but subs in

Libero-only plays back row, but does not substitute in to play, they replace any back row player and can play almost every play

  2. As for all the other answers, they are correct.  The opposite is the other person "opposite" the setter.  But no one has really told you why they call it opposite.  Here's the thing.  In a 6-2, when the setter is in the back row, they are considered a "setter".  You, on the other hand is the other setter, but you're not in the back row.  So, normally, by trade, setters are usually not great hitters (or not designed to be).  So, when you're in the front row, they can't call you an Outside Hitter then when you reach the back row, they now call you a Setter.  So, you're not a hitter, and you're not currently setting.  So, you're just the "Opposite" of the setter.

  3. You have six players of your team on the court. If you count yourself as number 1, then count 3 clockwise (or counter-clockwise), you will find another player (number 4) who is in opposite position of you.

  4. an opposite is some one that hits on the RIGHT side of the court, so if you're looking straight at the net in the middle of the court, it's the right side. but in some rotations, the opposite is the backrow setter....

  5. the opposites we talked about are for setters- if you have ur setter in their "home" posisiton, the back row setter wil be in left back position....if you are just starting and your team isnt too advanced yet, you'll just do a counter clockwise rotation.

  6. an opposite is the person that is exactly opposite of you. say your a setter, your opposite is the other setter/ right side hitter. and it goes the same with all positions.  when you rotate just move to the right one position. and make sure that if you count clockwise that you are 3 players away from your opposite. after you get it it is really really easy.

  7. I've never heard it called opposite, but I'm assuming your coach means the player who is opposite the setter in the rotation. It used to be called the weak side hitter because typically that was where you put your weakest player, however more advanced coaches realize that in fact this is one of the most important positions because when you're in the front row, you're blocking the other team's power or left side hitter who typically are the strongest hitters. Now the weak side position is more commonly referred to as off-side or right side. This position requires a player to be able to cover for the setter if they can't get the second ball, to be able to block strong hitters, and to be able to attack as well. It's a great position - I started out as a middle and recently moved to the right side and I LOVE it!
