  1. agree with above answers.

to get a real life account about one of the greatest caddies of all time - read "Caddy for Life: The Bruce Edwards Story" by John Feinstein. Truly a wonderful story, beautifully written.

  2. JODACR -

    Interesting question.

The art of caddying, especially on the professional level has definitely evolved over the years. The old caddy adage used to be, "show up, keep up, and shut up!" If those three things took place, then the caddy was a success.

However nowadays the player / caddy relationship is deemed intregal to a players success.

The caddy has to be part friend, part phychiatrist, part taskmaster, and part motivator ... not only that, the caddy has to know when to use be a taskmaster and when to be a friend....there's a fine line there that you cannot cross.

The caddy also has to be in good shape to haul the clubs around, he'll be responsible for keeping the clubs and balls clean, he'll rake the traps and replace divots, and some players will have their caddy get yardage for them, not all players will not trust the caddy to calculate yardage.

Some caddies will have local knowldge of a course and may be relied upon to direct a player around a particular setup, although nowadays this doesn't happen much on the professional level.

  3. First and foremost they are suppose to make sure the proper number of clubs are in the bag.  They let the golfer know where the pin placements are for each hole in each round of the tournament.  They are to alert them of what is a good spot to hit their shots and if they miss, where to miss.  They help read the putts if needed.  They help keep the guy calm depending on their relationship.  They may help in the selection of clubs for the player to use on a specific shot.  Therefore it would be helpful for them to know how far the player hits each of his/her clubs.

  4. Ya, what Ohio_Golfer said.

  5. they pretty much carry around/drive the golfer around to all the holes and helps him out when need

    its like an apprenticeship

  6. Carry the clubs, keep them clean and ready to to use

Read puts (if needed, some pros do their own)

Give ACCURATE distances to targets, hazards, etc.

KNOW pin placements, unseen hazards, wind conditions, expected weather, etc.

Keep the pro's head screwed on correctly

Most are professionals at this and make their living doing it.  Some are friends/family members, etc.
