like people say actors do pilots what does that mean

it's pretty much a prototype tv show. it's to see if the station's viewers will like it.

A pilot is a TV show that is produced for network executives and potential advertisers to see if they will "option it" (i.e. buy the show for a series).  It also allows the production company to see how the cast is working together-or not.  Not unusual for some actors/directors to be replaced as a prerequisite of being optioned.

Not so much for audiences-though sometimes they are shown to control groups to fine tune it for a target demographic.

A "test" tv show is called pilots.

so a producer wants to make 1 episode of "friends" show to sell it.  That 1 episode would be called pilot.

This question really belongs in the Television section, but here's the answer anyway.  A television Pilot is like a test show that networks put out there to see if anyone will watch.
