what lasts longer. in particular how long does a lithium battery last for?

It's hard to pin down a time since it entirely depends on the device you are using. In comparing battery types however Lithium batteries tend to outperform NiMH and NiCd batteries in most applications.

One thing I like to look for in consumer electronics though is the ability to use regular batteries if possible. This allows you to then use rechargeable batteries from any manufucturer instead of a proprietary battery pack, and if you need batteries in a hurry you can always throw some regular alkaline cells in there too.  People usually learn this lesson the first time they need to buy a special battery pack for thier camera because the old one doesn't charge anymore.
