Since Reagan/Bush took over in 1981, the national deficit has increased when Republicans held the White House. Wouldn't you rather have a leader who doesn't just put everything "on the card". We as citizens have to have money coming in to pay the bills, why shouldn't the government?
Net interest on the U.S. national debt was approximately $240 billion in fiscal years 2007 and 2008. This represented approximately 9.5% of government receipts. Interest was the fourth largest single disbursement category, after defense, Social Security, and Medicare. Wouldn't paying off the debt free up on that money for tax cuts, health care, infrastructure?
