  1. 250X would be my choice!

  2. The 250x will have more on the top end and is faster over all, but the crf250 and the kxf 250 will take it in the shorter distance.  For trails I would take the 250x.  The difference in the sunspention will make you quicker for trails.  A motocross bike will beat you to death on trail rides as will a 250x on a motocross track.  The 250x will take jumps good and long as you don't plan to take it on any table tops.  As far as durability, HONDA is the only way to go.  They are still the only one to split the trans oil from the engine oil.  This lets you run a true synthetic "with molly" in the engine, and keep engine build up out of your transmission.  Valve sticking is a big problem with any brand of bike like this, and "molly" really helps this problem, but it will make clutch slip if you run it in the trans side. This is another reason why Honda split them.   The 250x will also have a longer engine life between rebuilds.  I hope that helped you.

  3. The cr250X will have a light and lighting coil. It also has a magic button. The Kawa and crf250r will be set up for closed course and not geared for trail use unless you are an intermediate or expert level rider.

As far as durability, the 250 four strokes demand a lot of routine maintenance to keep them running. Be prepared to do a top end inspection often. A four stroke pulling the RPMs these bikes do demand to be taken care of.

Want a good bike for trails, reliable, easy to maintain and lightweight??? Go to your local shop and look at a 125 or 250 two stroke. With the big push to four strokes you can find a good deal on a new two stroke that can literally smoke the same size four stroke. Blow up the top end on the two stroke...fix it for around $300 worst case scenario...on the four stroke...be prepared for around $800 to $1,000.

If you are a new rider check out your local Kawasaki dealers to see if they have any KDX 200's left around. The model was dropped in '06 but can be found for around $3,700. Add a FMF Gnarly pipe, silencer, rejet it and you have a trail ripping bike that has shown for three decades to be one of the most bulletproof and successful trail bikes. I just bought a new 2005 and it runs right up there with those $7,000 orange bikes all day long. Shame this fine bike got the boot. Sales were down and from talking to Kawasaki execs a lot of the reason is the old ones are still running strong and guys just don't buy new ones.

  4. i would stick  with the 250x
