Whats better for learning guitar... self taught? or taught by someone?

id go for the self taught dvd method, but i dno if id get more out of being taugh in a class

It depends on the style of music you want to play and your innate talent.

Many blues guitarists of genius--the Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson--probably never took formal lessons though doubtless peers told them how to do this slide or make that sound. It does seem to me that anyone who cannot figure out simple pop songs or folk tunes shouldn't pick up the instrument.

On the other hand, it's impossible that people like Julien Bream or Andres Segovia never had a lesson. They also gave lessons. This music is more sophisticated and requires regular practice that is best reinforced formally.
