I have a pretty large home and garage, I would like to install approx 10 cameras.....If I use cat 5 how will I power my cameras that are far away ? I understand some IR cams use alot of current and need 1amp or more ? I need advice on best cameras too, before I waste any more money on junk....Please help me out people, much thanks in advance

  1. I typically use Panasonic IP cameras and power them with 16/2 speaker wires out the low side of the transformer. This works fine, even in large houses. By large I mean 6000 to 10000 square feet. We mount the transformers in surge protectors (which are plugged into battery back-up units) in a central location and distribute the power right along with the cat5e.

The advantage to Panasonic is they have mac addresses, so the DVR is optional instead of required and they have a free web site you can log into to see your cameras from anywhere you have Internet access.
