  1. Depends on what you like and how fast you want to go. Ice and hard packed snow make for a faster run than powder but it hurts more when you wipe out powder is better for trix and slower speeds

  2. it depends on the level of skier you are. if you are are the type that does not enjoy flying down a hill and really carving in, then stick with the powder skiing. powder skiing provides you with a slower, softer run, but it works your legs much better. turning is more difficult, and there is more of a likelihood to catch an edge. I prefer powder, it is so soft and easy. it is like skiing on the crests of whipped cream, it also makes moguls a lot easier.

  3. I've been an expert skier for over 35 yrs. & I've skied in all kinds of conditions!!!

Icy conditions are the worst & can be very dangerious. Even if you have your blades sharpened, your skis will still slide & you can't carve your turns. You can fall very easily & it's very hard to stop fast & it will make your skiing too fast & out of control.

Some skiers prefer hard snow to powder while others prefer hard snow. Hard packed snow can be excellent such as skiing on a slope that has just been groomed by a machine. I've skied my best on groomed slopes like this & they are hard backed & usually have little or no ice.

Powdered skiing is quite different & I like this as much as hard packed groomed slopes but it depends what kind of mood I'm in. Some skiers prefer only powdered skiing & there are specific ski resorts that have the best powdered skiing in the world. Steamboat Springs In Colorado & Jackson Hole, WY have some of the best powdered skiing in the world. It's all natural snow. Another thing to remember about powdered is skiing is that it's usually the best at higher elevations where it's colder & this creates a softer, lighter snow which is perfect powder. The only drawback is that the higher elevations have the coldest temperatures.

Hard snow or hard packed snow is very enjoyable to ski on & you'll find it anywhere the slopes are groomed. The advantage to this grooming is that you're guaranteed good skiing under almost any conditions. The grooming machines will cut through & chop up the ice until it's hard packed. This snow can make it very easy to carve your turns in!!!

  4. Depends on your experience and your ability.  Both conditions are very skiable. I feel that hard pack with some ice is much safer than crud, but crud is not powder, not all fresh snow is powder.  True powder is some of the easiest snow that can be skied, hard pack and ice are also easy to ski under control when you have the skill and your equipment is properly tuned.

As to what is better, powder that is still fresh is the ultimate skiing experience, like floating in a feather bed and never landing.

  5. for me, ice and hard snow. powder always makes me stuck >.<

  6. Depends on your level of skiing and where you ski.  You ski out west, the conditions are usually powdery snow or powder.  You ski in the northeast, you ski hard icy snow, or ice.  I've skied many years, and I try to stay away from ice.  Ice is where people get hurt.
