  1. Don't know anything about the barracks, but Guetersloh itself is little more than a big village, pretty boring there.

male4girlz : I pretty much thought that Guetersloh equals being banished myself, but didn't want to say that...;-)

  2. Why , are British combat troops still stationed in Germany?  Is it still part of the occupation?    Do Germans object or even care any more?  I know their a pacifist country, they don't mind foreign troops?

  3. Hey, what did your friend do? I work here in Guetersloh for about 5 years now and they told me they send only tha bad guys, heh. Must be kind of a punishment... Anyway, the city really is pretty boring but you can (I hope you can) go to nearby bigger city Bielefeld for shopping and entertainment.

  4. They will be lucky to get a quarter.  We were posted there last year to be told there was a ten month wait for a flat so our posting was cancelled!

I live about half an hour away from there as it happens and it will be what she makes of it.  It takes some getting used to, but is okay and we live and work tax free which is a bonus.  Mail me if you want any more info

    Have a look at http://www.army.mod.uk/gutersloh/index.h...

  5. I am sorry I won't be able to answer your question exactly, but the other answers have inspired me to put in my bit.

The other Army lady informs you married that quarters are hard to come by, but tell your friend not to be anxious.

Even if the Army puts her and her family amongst the German population, she will be able to reach the camp, the NAAFI and what have you easily, also the children their English school. And believe it or not the Germans are quite friendly, not at all wild.

Don't be put off by someone with such a German name asking if there are still 'combat' troops in Germany. Yes, there are British troops, have been since 1945 and never ever has there been any hostility towards them.

They were welcome when they fought their way in to free Germany from Hitler and his cronies, they have been welcome all the time of the cold war, and they are welcome now!

The Germans in the British occupied zone (after the war) learned democracy of the British, and they are grateful that they were able to do so.

So tell your friend to go over there and if you have to live in a German village take part in their activities and life too, it will widen her family's horizon and she should do so in every country the Army will send her to with her husband.

    Good luck to them!
