Whats going on?

At work I have a very good reputation for results. I have succeeded on all my projects with no guidence from my bosses. I practically manage myself. I get along with everyone and most people come to me because they know I have the answers.

Why would two guys who are not as good get promoted to directors positions and not me?

The latest promotion was because one coworker implemented a new service center that supposedly will save money. I happen to know for a fact that his boss gave him all the direction.

I one my own initiated a project and implemented a program that made my company 17 million dollars in 2 years. WTF????

  1. Your going to need to ask your boss that, how can we know what the problem is.  Don't mention your coworkers, just ask to meet with your boss, tell him you'd like to move up the ladder, and ask him what you need to do.  Try to get answers from him that are as specific as possible, he'll probably like the inititive.  If you don't like what you hear or he can't really answer you, or you do waht he says and still don't get promoted - you can always look around for another job where they may appreciate you more.

Really, hard to say from what you've said if you are doing something wrong or if you are just not being noticed.

  2. Because being promoted has more to do than just with results.  Companies like team efforts more than individual, so a successful project without collaboration isn't as valuable (nor does it have as much visibility) as one done with the bosses' input.

If you can implement those types of programs, I recommend using that success to become a director at another company -

  3. Most people who are passed over for promotions have shown no interest in being promoted. It happened to me for years. Then one day I heard of a position that would be opening in a few months. I decided, almost tongue in cheek, to ask the supervisor what would it take for me to get that position.  The reply was you want it, it's yours. Now we have to fill your spot instead. What do you do?

Most supervisors outside your specific area have no clue what you do or have done. You may have initiated a project  but your department made the company 17 million dollars in 2 years. That's just how it is.
