I woke up this morning and all my angelfish have white stuff on their fins and eyes. The balashark (the only other species) was dead. could it be that since he died he got them sick cause i didn't find him till later? Also, I took the water to the fish store and they said my Ph was way off and to change the water more, he suggested 5 gallons a day till the Ph goes up but everytime I change it they get sick, what should I do, I've had that bala shark for a year and some longer Im worried.

  1. it looks like you have ick in your tank which most have killed your shark so run to the pet store and buy some fish medicine.

  2. The fish store told you wrong.  Something in your tank is causing your PH to drop.  What else is in your tank?

Maintaining a weekly 25% water change when cleaning is fine.

Also, sounds like your fish have ich.  It is rare that fish will die that quickly from Ich however the ph changing every time you do a water change will.

Test the PH of your tap water or the water you are using to fill the tank.

Items in your tank could be causing the ph to decrease subjecting the fish to fluxing  levels which in turn leads to stress which leads to ich.

Check out the decorations or plants you have in the tank.  One of them is the culprit.  Start by removing them next water change.  Slowly add one at a time back to the tank test each one in a couple of days to find out which one.

You will need to treat the remaining fish for ich.

  3. There are several possible explanations for the "white stuff on their fins and eyes".  Ich, fungus, and even excessive mucus from the shock of a pH change are all possibilities.  Are the white things like grains of salt, cottony, or just slimy?  Can you get pictures?  If it is fungus or Ich, any of the medications containing malachite green (sometimes called victoria green B) or copper [sulfate] will be very effective.  Be sure to remove any activated carbon from the filter.  If using malachite green, keep the tank dark, as it degrades with exposure to light.

I'm guessing this is the first time you've checked your pH.  The chances of something in the tank lowering the pH (a LOT driftwood, peat, or a buildup of nitrate would do this) are fairly low-- it is much more likely that the water from your tap already has a low pH, and was entirely unrelated to the fishes' problems.
