  1. When gas is SOOOO expensive, there is no way but for the government to step in - in ingenuous, creative ways. And perhaps, a good starting point is less taxes on oil. But this can mislead people to think that taxes alone will cure th problem. It is us, people, my friend, who has to think of ways to save on fuel. In the home, in the office, in the malls, on the road. Think small and save. Why are Americans somewhat ashamed to be seen driving around in a Kia or a Hyundai, when it can move you safely from Point A to Point B. Why do they have to drive a 3-ton vehicle just to buy a pack of cigarrettes three or four blocks away. Use the motorbike, or bike instead, or walk, my friend. It's good for the heart.

  2. Break out the bike or walking shoes or retire.

  3. The price here started going down last week.

  4. People are going to move away from ridiculous places like where you live now, and to cities and villages where transit actually works.  Usually the best public transit systems are built around rail http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_trans... so that's the thing to watch for.  Transit doesn't work everywhere, not even in transit cities like Brooklyn or San Francisco -- but if you choose intelligently where you live and work, it works extremely well.  You can live cheaper without a car in cities like that than you can with a car where you live -- not even counting the cost of fuel.  And salaries are higher.  And you're in a real city, with food, culture, nightlife etc.

Other than that, I expect people to move closer to their jobs, out of sprawl suburbs to closer-in suburbs, buy better cars, etc. The government isn't going to step in to save our sprawl-suburb SUV lifestyle because it isn't worth saving, it's just what we chose back when gas was $1/gallon, and now that reality has changed, we can choose something else.

  5. compromise.  theres other things we can do to make things work.  i already seen over 4 bucks a gallon.  i don't do much driving and lot of other people are doing the same thing.
