Whats happens when you go to cuba and you are american?

If you live in america and you want to go to cuba how do you get there? And if you go there and you get caught what will happen?Will the people in cuba relize that ur american and then be mean to you?

Many Americans travel to Cuba.  

Many enter through Canada or Mexico.  

It's against the law for US citizens to spend money in Cuba, which is why many use cash only so it can't be traced.  There is a penalty of up to $7500.

The Cubans will warmly welcome you into Cuba. They have no problem with Americans visiting. Don't worry, they won't stamp your passport. Thousands of Americans visit Cuba with no repercussions.

Many Americans choose to travel to Cuba via 3rd country, such as Canada. The travel is not illegal to Cuba from the US...but it's the spending of money. So if you do not want to go through the OFAC to get a travel license (which is allowed for specific reasons), you can take the chance to come through Canada.

You just need to make sure that you purchase your ticket in cash and avoid all paper trails when returning to the US.

The other answers are spot on.  The main thing to remember is you DON'T MAKE A PAPER TRAIL... take only CASH; fly through a third country such as Canada or Mexico and don't bring ANYTHING back that OBVIOUSLY came from CUBA... so that means you leave the cigars there.  

If you travel through Mexico, the anything you buy that looks a bit mexican, will probably go through customs when you come back to the U.S.

You need a current passport and the visa in Cuba, if they even STAMP one, will be on a separate piece of paper that you can discard before coming back to the U.S.
