Whats involved in sitting hgv licence?

I know its changed now to cat C and cat C+E got my provisional car licence years ago and passed car test in july '87 cant get same answer from two hgv training schools thanks

  1. the major difference between a car test and a HGV test is the reversing manouver, instead of reversing round a corner you have to reverse into a marked bay made of cones. The emergency stop is done on a manouvering area and not on the public highway.

    You need to make sure you have a cat C provisional on your licence and go through a  a HGV medical, your doc can help you out with that Other than that the requirements are the same as a car test




  2. Just to add, there used to be a gear shift 'manoeuvre' as well.

    This involved stopping, then starting off, shifting up through all the gears, getting to about 40mph, then decelerating and downshifting to a halt again.

    Not sure if the still do that one, though?
