  1. I own cues from 100. to 20,000. and if you lay them on the table side by side none of them will make a shot for you.

Try to grab a straight cue that feels good and have a decent tip put on and go.

  2. Get one you can shoot with

Weight is personal choice and your stroke controls the ball not so much the stick I hope Straight answers this Q he explains things a lot better than i can

A high dollar stick you cant make a ball with is just a $5,000 broomstick

  3. First, lets determine if we're talking about choosing a house cue or selecting your own personal cue to purchase.  Let's start with house cues.  The first thing to look for is the tip.  This is the only part of the cue that touches the cue ball and is the most important part of the cue.  For a standard 13mm shaft, the tip should have roughly the curvature of a nickel when viewed from the side.  The reason for this is to have the maximum amount of tip-to-ball contact.  The curve of the tip is designed to match the curve of the cue ball.  Straightness is also important.  Still, I would choose a slightly wobbly cue (within reason) with a great tip over a laser beam straight cue with a mushroomed or flattened tip.  The weight of the cue is a matter of personal choice.  Over time, you will figure out what works best for your style of play.  Personally, I prefer lighter cues, around 18 oz.  The definition of "English" is spin imparted to the cue ball by hitting left or right of the vertical axis.  If you're hitting along the vertical axis, such as a draw or follow shot, technically it's not English.  English is used primarily to get position on your next shot.  Beware of overusing it, however.  It can get you into trouble.  In my opinion, you can get position on over 90% of your shots without leaving the vertical axis.  I don't think I'm going to get into two-piece cues right now in any great detail.  I do think that people underestimate the importance of the joint itself.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

  4. first of all if your right handed, get a right handed pool cue and if your a lefty use a left handed pool cue, this is all you need to know.

  5. To answer the 3 questions you  ask?

1 As a beginning billiards player, most of you might only be using cue sticks provided by the billiards place where you play. However, if you want to really improve your game you need to have your own cue so you won't have the problem of having to adjust to the length of the cue or the weight of the cue or the diameter of the cue tip. It is important to take note (while you still don't have a cue stick) the type of cue that you feel most comfortable with. Experiment with different cue sticks. Examine the weight, the length and the diameter of the tip. After you've decided on what is most comfortable to you then you are ready to buy one.

2 Weight and Feel? weight of  stick is all about balance and  confort or feel...

The weight and feel can make a big difference in your game. Most cue sticks are at or around 57” in length. And where is the weight balance? Some are heavier in the back-end than others. Typically, sticks from the same brand will have a similar feel to each other during play. A good strategy can be to find the brand that works for you and stick with it.

3 English can be used to control the speed of the cue ball after making contact with the object ball.

You can control the position of the cue ball even without it bouncing off the cushion

English is basically used to control the cue balls path, direction etc  thru angel and or spin  applied to the ball acheiving the desired effect after or before contact with an object ball or rail.  teh type  and degree of english is determined by the angle in which  cue tip contacts the cue ball .. as for exact  directions? well  practice  and observation is the only best teacherWell I hope that helps   Cheers

  6. First of all, make sure it's straight...roll it over a table and make sure it doesn't wobble.  Weight is a personal accommodation, that you will determine in time. English is putting a specific spin on the cue ball for difficult shots and placing the cue ball in a strategic position after your shot is done, in an effort to not give your opponent an easy shot or keep them away from the eight ball or a winning shot..It's done by hitting the Cue ball in any position that's not dead center, every angle will have a different result and it's something you can only learn with experience...Hope this helped!

  7. It's very important to choose a good pool cue since that is the tool that you will be using.  A good cue consists of two pieces and should weight anywhere between 18.5 to 20oz which really depends on with what you're comfortable with.  A good pool cue will also consist of a flexible shaft which will help in applying english or sidespin. Keep in mind though, the most important part of the cue is the tip.   You'/re tip should be round like the cue-ball so you can keep applying english to the cue-ball.

  8. Some tend to be to springee in the shaft, giving you to much deflection.
