  1. AIM = AOL Instant Messenger

    MSN = MSN messenger

    Depending on which email address you have, you should use the appropriate messenger. More people on a general level are registered with MSN, which makes MSN messenger the more popular one in the market.

  2. They are both instant messenger software.

    AIM works with AOL emails and MSN works with hotmail and msn emails.

  3. AIM is AOL's messenger program, MSN is Microsoft's messenger.  AIM used to be messenger only with no free E-mail provided.  With a paid subscription to AOL, however, you could upgrade and have an E-mail address AND messenger account with internet service provided by AOL.  Due to technology advancing at such an outstanding speed, AIM started to dwindle and needed to keep users using it, thus the idea of a free E-mail account for AIM users to use.  In the end, it finally started being more like MSN.  All in all, a messenger program is a messenger program when it comes down to the bottom line.  I myself use "Trillian" as it allows you to use AOL, MSN, !and! YAHOO! messengers all with ONE log on after setting it up.  You'll be able to access all your friends with just one program instead of three.  But, when it comes down to it, it really is just preference.
