  1. DirectX is an API used by programmers to draw 3d stuff on the screen, it's used in almost all modern games.

If you have Windows Vista then you will have DirectX 10, if you're on XP then you're out of luck. Don't worry though, DirectX 10 is slower than DirectX 9 and doesn't offer very many new features. Almost all games out today will run on DirectX 9.

  2. Simply, directx is a set of programs that windows uses for multimedia graphics, etc - mostly used by games.

What version of windows do you have, 10 is only usable by Vista (and I believe is the version shipped with vista, so if you have XP then you can't go higher than 9.  If you _do_ have vista and only directx 9, try doing a windows update, and if that doesn't update it, check the microsoft site.

  3. 1. DirectX is an API for programs to use to control video and audio hardware, and receive input from controllers, rather than trying to control the hardware directly.

    2. DirectX 9 is the latest available version for Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP. A version of DirectX 9 is included in Vista. DirectX 10 is Vista-only.
