  1. v=λ*f

    v:The speed of sound

    λ:the wavelength

    so λ=v/f

    The speed of sound describes how much distance such a wave travels in a certain amount of time. In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the speed of sound is 343 m/s (1235 km/h, or 770 mph, or 1129 ft/s, or approximately 5 seconds per mile).

  3. * The length of a single cycle of a wave, as measured by the distance between one peak or trough of a wave and the next; it is often designated in physics as λ, and corresponds to the velocity of the wave divided by its frequency.

    *velocity = wavelength x frequency

    *For sound waves in air, this is the speed of sound, 345 m/s (1238 km/h) in air at room temperature and atmospheric pressure

    * v = 331 m/s + (0.6 m/s/C)•T

    where T is the temperature of the air in degrees Celsius.

    *Using this equation to determine the speed of a sound wave in air at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius yields the following solution.

    v = 331 m/s + (0.6 m/s/C)•T

    v = 331 m/s + (0.6 m/s/C)•(20 C)

    v = 331 m/s + 12 m/s

    v = 343 m/s
