    and if you live in the city;

    cars.

  2. Insects, frogs, and Guidos.

  3. If I knew what noise you were hearing then I might be able to help you out a little bit more.  Most probably, you could be hearing birds, insects, or some other normal forest animal.  There's always a possibility that it could be a dog that got loose and went feral, or even a coyote if it howles or makes a growling noise.

  4. a gecko

  5. Animals, insects, the general environment.

  6. just insects. crickets and grasshoppers are most of the insects that make noise.

  7. bears

  8. Cicadia's

  9. Maybe frogs. I know about 30 or so calls, and despite what you expect few actually say 'ribbit'. (so far, the only one I know that does is the Pacific Tree Frog). After that, it's a variety of 'chirps' and 'groans' and 'squeaks', 'glunks', 'jug-o'rums', etc.

    These are most common in the early evening, but the frogs will call all night (and some also in the daytime).  It's only the males that call, which they do to attract females.

    Although you're posting from the States, you can hear a number of calls on the Frogwatch Canada website: http://www.naturewatch.ca/english/select... I imagine the ones in Southern Ontario or Quebec would overlap somewhat with the ones in your region.
