  1. I hardly ever use butter.  I may use Miracle Whip occasionally.  Mostly I use Mustard

  2. Id use a low fat spread (not necessarily butter) something like Olivio made from olive oil as its better for you and ''good'' fats instead of fatty cancer causing fats that have been chemically altered.

  3. Butter :) I dont like mayo

  4. Both are good.  I like Heinz sandwich spread myself.

  5. I guess butter because it goes with absolutely everything. I luuuurve mayonaise but it doesn't go with everything (I mean ham and mayonaise sandwich and nothing else = a bit weird / ham and butter sandwich = nice combo).

  6. Miracle Whip on most sandwiches that have meat in them.  We only have mayo on sandwiches in a restaurant.  Don't even keep mayo in our house.

Jam sandwiches need only jam and bread.  My Mom always put butter on any sandwich, and we always argued about that.  I thought she was spoiling the taste of it, she thought she was improving it.

  7. def mayo...i never put butter in a sandwich, only on toast

  8. most people prefer butter because they are more tastier...

mayonnaise may sometimes give you a bellyache

  9. I buy the cheapest mayonnaise and spread that on bread for a sandwich, if i want jam on bread then obviously i use cheap margarine with a supermarket cheap strawberry jam, taste as good as the others and if you hungry can seem better.

  10. I can't think of any sandwich that I'd put butter on, except an egg sandwich.  I like a little mayo on some sandwiches, but spicy mustard is much more important to me

  11. Surely, the standard thing to do with bread is to BUTTER it !

  12. MMMMMMM mayonaise all the way...especially when it's a chicken salad sandwhich...my tummy just started rumbling, im off to make one!.

  13. peanut butter and nutella!

  14. butter...cuz what if your having a jam sandwich??? but i would have salad cream over mayonaise any day.. it tastes better :)

  15. Definitely mayo. I have butter but only on certain things. But you can't have a sandwich without mayo.

  16. Hellman's mayonnaise is an essential sandwich condiment. Hellman's is considered the best mayonnaise.

  17. You may as well put a chunk of lard on it, those are both bad for you, try mustard or at least miracle whip they have a lot less harmful fats in them. I don't mean to nag but you must watch your fat intake or it will cause major health problems later. Good luck.

  18. Mayo =]

  19. neither, I'd rather have it plain! But I normally put mustard on my sandwiches!

  20. Actually I reckon the bread is the most important thing.  If it's rubbish bread, no matter how good the filling it's just not going to taste as good as you hope it will.

  21. I prefer mayonnaise but then again I always have salad in my sandwiches so need something like mayo or pickle to make them moist and tasty.

  22. Butter me up!!

  23. Butter defo. But it depends. If you have cheese then no butter ergh.

  24. Butter, like you I can't eat a sandwich without it :)

  25. Lurpak - every time!

  26. most important GOOD BREAD

I hate this mushy white gunk for me, dark bread only. either a good rye, pumpernickel or whole wheat.

  27. well essential?  normally means having a filling. the fat based spread such as mayo or butter isn't that but does offer a huge taste improvement.

personally I cant stand mayo but love butter  so.. everybody may have a different answer but the question posed asks the 'essential' on a sandwich so my answer has to be 'The Filling'.

  28. I would sat it depends on the bread. When it's soft, mayonnaise totally spoils it IMO,and butter should be preferred.

  29. Mayo is only necessary when you've got meat.

When you have mayo, you don't need butter also.

It doesn't make the bread more moist at all, just the meat/ filling.

Combining them only adds completely unnecessary calories

  30. butter, cos not all sandwiches have mayo in them x xx

  31. Mayo! 4 shizzle!
