  1. Both are good manufacturers, but in my opinion, Discraft is by far the better producer.  I own about 15 discs from both companies, and my discraft discs are the ones that I regularly throw.

When someone gets into disc golf, they always want to just drive far.  It is far more important to throw straight and with control.  You will become a much better disc golfer if you learn control before distance.  Sometimes, and most times, throwing with a straight disc will give you more distance than a disc designed for distance.  Also, lighter weights (150-165g) will give you more distance, because you are probably not throwing with a lot of power, being new to the sport.  Lighter weights=more glide=more distance.

Straight Discraft discs: Pro-D Cyclone, Elite X XS, Pro-d Buzzz, Elite X XL

Straight Innova discs: DX Gazelle, DX Leopard, Star TL, DX Shark

All of these discs will give newer players added distance.

Another way to quickly lower scores, is by working on putting.  It separates the pro's from you and I.  Make sure your putting with a putter.

Innova Putters:  DX Aviar P&A, DX XD

Discraft Putters: Pro-D Magnet, Pro-D Challenger

  2. Basically you just gotta go out there and test to see what works the best for you at your skill level. Ive been playing for 8 years now and the better I get the better different discs do for me.  2 years ago... a disc that I thought was the greatest for me I may not even use now because I am a better player. If your looking for distance id look for something that is really stable since your new to the sport. I wouldn't worry too much about weight yet. Have fun.

  3. I use Innova drivers and putters and Discraft mid ranges.

I haven't had much luck with Discrafts drivers. I've owned a few of them but they didn't feel comfortable and didn't fly the way I wanted them to.

If your a novice and are looking for a good driver you can't really go wrong with a Champion or Star Beast from Innova. I also recommend a Valkryie.

  4. I would have to say that INNOVA discs are superior. Most of the top proffesionals use INNOVA (Ken Climo - the best player ever).

Assuming that you are female by your avatar, you should get the INNOVA "Champion" Valkyrie (a pro female disc with a slightly smaller radius). The "champion" plastic is way more durable and is recomended if you dont mind spending an extra $5 or so.. This is an excellent distance driver , even for men.

The weight of the disc depends on your strength. If you are not very big or strong then i would suggest going with a lighter driver (like 161-163). The heavier drivers (like 175) can be thrown further but require more strength. The weight is usually listed on the bottom of the disc, in the center.

If you get the Innova Champion Valkyrie, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Go to INNOVA' s website: innovadiscs.com

They have links to online retailers and can also direct you to a local retailer.

  5. Popularity vs Functionality:

both manufacturers make meritable products.  Both make discs that fly the direction you want.  finding comparison charts are key.  try this link at the bottom for a direct comparison from all manufacturers.

  6. both companies put out great products.  one company won't give you better distance.  most people dont like one company over the other.  i know discraft discs are manufactured in michigan, and since i live in northern illinois, discraft is more readily available to me, so most of the discs i use are discraft, but my go-to disc is my pro valkyrie by innova....go figure.  when i played on the east coast with carl cubbedge and others, they mostly had innovas.

of the two companies, i like discraft a little more because they are a little more innovative, and seem to "keep with the times" a little better.  since it's cold most of the year here, a soft, durable plastic is important to me.  FLX plastic by discraft is a perfect fit for my winter rounds.  and the limited edition crystal plastics they put out are just plain cool.  innovas answer to the FLX was the "star" series, which is good too.  like i said, availability.

dont underestimate quest, lightning, and ching either.  the ching JuJu putter is far and away the straightest, most comfortable putter i've ever thrown.  lightning is the best "beginners" brand out there because they take all the guesswork out of the discs.  the print exactly what the disc was designed to do right on the disc.  "roller #1"  "helix #3" etc etc.....are actually the names on the disc.  if you want a big hyzer disc, then you buy the disc that is named "Hyzer #3"  and quest is great because they are constantly trying new things to advance the sport.

if you're "looking for a long drive" take your discs out to a football field and just start heaving them.  you can tweak your throw and say "what am i doing wrong?"  that is the absolute best way to teach yourself how to drive.  never practice on a course.  if you practice driving on a course then you spend 2 hours practicing and only throw 18 drives at best.  if youre in a field, you can throw 100 drives in half the time.  it's also pretty easy to practice putting off the course too.  i hang a blanket at the end of my hallway and put a small piece of tape on it about the height of the chains on a basket, and then try to hit the tape on every throw.  putting practice in the hallway has really helped my game a lot.

as far as brands go, it really doesnt make a difference.  for a beginner, stick with slow speed, lightweight discs.
