  1. If you could edit your question and add any more details, it would be very helpful for people to help you.

Useful details for researchers is most importantly,  what Country are they from (born at, lived in, died at) What State, County, City?  Also any birth, marriage, or death dates.  If you don't know, an estimated birth date would do.

Do they have a middle name or initial that you know of?  Was Pope your grandmother's married name or maiden name?  Do you  know of their spouses first names, maiden names, or any of  their siblings names?.

Without this info., it can be alot of work looking in places that aren't necessary and you may end of with a very long list of irrelevant information.  If you have nothing, at least the country and birthdate estimate is really important.

    Thanks.

  2. Yes... as i suspected...!  :)

I just did a quick search to confirm.  Peeples is an alternate spelling of the name Peebles.

All the Peebles hailed originally from Scotland and a place there by the same name.

To answer what might be your next question, no, they are not associated with any particular clan.

  3. Genealogy is not that simple. It does not work that way.

First, you cannot do reasearch based on your last name. That is not the right way to do genealogy. The origins of your name may have NOTHING to do with the history of your family. Also, it does not take into account all the parts of your family history and ancestors that do not share your last name.  You can do research about the origins of  your last name, or you can do research on your ancestors.  The two are not the same thing and doing one will likely not tell you anything about the other.  But researching your ancestors is more accurate genealogy than researching your last name.

Second, you are not going to find anything on anyone who lived in the last 50-100 years. It is unethical to post anything on anyone living or that recently deceased as it protects the identity of the living from identity theft and scams. Professional genealogists know this.

Third, IF you do find anything on the internet of your family (probably starting around 1900 and going back), you cannot assume just because it is on the internet means it is accurate. The only way to know if the information you find is right is to do your OWN research from scratch. A lot of people out there copy and paste other people's bad "research" and don't verify anything. That is wrong.

Fourth, unless you have a great-aunt or someone who has already done some research and posted it on the net, then your family will not be on the internet. People don't usually go around researching trees of total strangers for no reason at all and just put it on the internet for that stranger to one day find their whole family tree in 5 clicks or less.

Fifth, genealogy is fun and rewarding, but also very difficult and challenging, like putting together a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. And will take longer than doing that puzzle to do.

The best thing to do is to start by asking questions of your living relatives. Collect as much information as possible regarding names, dates, places, etc. and DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.

Then start an internet search as well as doing some research the old fashion way (going to libraries, court houses, cemeteries, etc.). If you find anything on the net, you need to try to reproduce the research yourself and see if you can find legitimate documentation of the individual, dates, or event in order to be sure the information is accurate. Trees on the net are to be used as clues and guidelines......not as gospel. Ask the poster about their resources and proof. Many times, you can find scanned copies of original documents such as census records. Otherwise, I would not take their word for it that what they have is right. As far as what sites to use, there are tons of them. You will need to just google for genealogy sites and sift through them. Some are free, some are not. All are subject to many errors, inaccurate, undocumented information that you will have to sift through and find what is right and what is not. You will probably end up using a combination of free and paid sites.

Last, you will not accomplish this overnight, in a week, month, or year. It is a LIFETIME hobby and passion, that, inspite of the countless hours you spend at it, it will never be completed. There is always another piece of the puzzle to find.

If you expect it to fall into your lap, all done and completed, and accurate, and FREE on the internet, with no work or challenge at all, then you are going to be disillusioned. Besides, that takes all the fun out of it.

  4. There are tons of people who would be willing to look up the nationality of your grandparents, but they'll need more information. For instance, if you give the birth year and place where your grandparents were born, as well as what year they were married, someone may be able to find them on the Census. (I am assuming they were born before 1930.) The Census will tell where your grandparents father and mother were born, and someone may be able to determine your g-grandparents names and where they and their parents were born. (If you know their names too, it will be much easier to locate information on them.) In short, your chances of someone being able to help you greatly increase the more information you share. Just only give out information about deceased family members, which I am assuming they are since otherwise you could just ask them. If they aren't deceased, and for some reason you can't ask them yourself, you should be okay giving out just their approximate birth year and birth place.

You can also attempt to find them on your own. Ancestry.com gives a free 14 days trial of its website, which lets you look through the Census and other documents on its website. You can also look to see if anyone else has them in their family tree by searching free forums on Genealogy.com or Rootsweb.com. You'll still need to get as much information on them as possible, preferably by talking to your parents or other family members or examining family documents that you may have copies of around your house.

    Good luck.

  5. Answers.com apparently hasn't done their homework.  Valid/orginal records exist showing the name Peoples in the 1600s in England, and there are also other records linking it to Ireland.  Saying that any Peeples is (automatically) a variation of Peebles, and thus from Scotland... is an assumption. Genealogy and assumptions just don't go together. It is not true that all persons with a certain surname will trace back to any one country.

We have no way of being sure if YOUR Percy is the man from Mississippi, or the Percy Peeples in Ohio. Another one is found in SC, and another shows up in Tennessee.  These come from census records. At least one of these is a Black family.  Clearly, EACH of them will have a completely different ancestry. Their actual heritage will be a composite, not just of the father's ancestry (who carries the surname), but includes their mother's (not to mention grandmothers, and gr grandmothers).

You can't go any further whatsoever, unless you have the correct person. Even if your Percy happens to be the gentleman from Miss., it would be risky using the posted information, unless you personally have verified that the research is accurate, using original records and documents.

I would hate to see you using faulty information, especially as part of a scholarship application for college.

  6. This is a "by guess and by golly" listing for Percy, since you didn't say where he was born. Of the listings on www.rootsweb.com, Miss.  is the only state in common with the 2 databases he was listed on, so hope that is right..

Could you edit your question and put in some dates/locations for Wanda?? There are dozens of them on ancestry.com. If I had them, I could edit my answer and go on from here. Same with Percy--you didn't give much to go by, so I hope what little info here is right.  :)
