Whats needed for laptop internet access?

my sister purchased a new laptop and i got her old one. it has wifi on it id like to use it my bedroom which is above my computer room. what do i need to get access through my desktop internet already in my house. just a router or a wireless modem. completely computer clueless.

The easiest way, assuming you have cable or DSL,  is a wireless router. Your new laptop should pick up the signal fine. You may have to purchase a wireless Ethernet card for your desktop, though, depending on your equipment.

Laptop should already have built in wireless adapter. Therefore you need a wireless router which your desktop can hook up to and your laptop can connect to.  A router is needed when you have more than one computer in the building and dont wanto use an ethernet hub, which means lots of cords. If you dont want to use wifi, you can still connect to the internet through a ethernet cord, which would still connect to a wireless router. using an ethernet cord might increase your internet speed, but that means you cant move around much.

Yes, you need to plug a router into your main computer and configure it to broadcast wifi, and then input the settings into your laptop.
