For the women I think it sounds most unlady like and most unneccasary. I think it should be stopped. Men don`t seem to do it so much. Appreciate your thoughts. Maybe I am old fashioned.

  1. i think it is most hilarious lol.

  2. i think it comes naturally with great effort. i do it from time to time it helps me put more power to the ball.

  3. they've been grunting since the beginning of time.

maybe they should surgically remove grunter's vocal chords?

  4. i always wonder if the girls make noises like that when they are being plooked!

  5. Blame it all on Monica Seles! Lol!!!

I guess the grunting irritates less and less people now a days since it's prevalent in women's tennis. I myself really don't mind as long as the game is worth watching and the match is so close you have no time to pee...

  6. I've answered a question like this before and I'm answering it again.

There's nothing with grunting. A true tennis fan should be able to sit and watch a match, regardless of whether the players grunt or not.

It isn't only the women that grunt. Nadal has one of the most annoying grunts I've ever heard, and a lot of the other men grunt too.

It's just something that happens. In a sport that is as intense as tennis is, some players just can't help it. I know that I personally can't help it when I play. It just happens.

If a player needs to grunt then they should be allowed. It would be negative for their game if they had to concentrate on not grunting, so I say leave it. The players of today grunt and that's that.

  7. Jimmy Connors,Monica Seles?

  8. erm its always been in tennis I dont think it has crept in, tennis rackets and balls are fairly heavy, there is alot of surface to cover, its very fast paced, requires alot of physical power and its really hot weather, im sure these tennis players wouldnt make the effort grunt, unless they really needed to, its not just for effect

  9. It's an annoying distraction from the game.  Monica Seles was always the worst in my opinion.

  10. I think it's deployed tactically. The grunting seems to be louder when they want to distract the opponent. God knows why because the opponent rarely gets affected by it.

  11. It actually gives u an extra boost of energy when your hitting the ball. I think volleyball players do it sometimes too. And its also good for intimidation but i dont think i would be intimidated for that. I like it though. It makes them sound tough.

  12. They are just looking for extra attention as they have gotton too carried away with it now.

  13. yea, the grunting sucks.  i can't stand to watch either of the williams sisters, or sharapova, she's just a little excessive.  unfortunately, it's been proven that grunting increases your adrenalin and thus increases your power and speed when participating in numerous sports.  so it looks like the grunting is here to stay.  I did hear roddick say something last year about his opponent grunting after ever shot.

  14. There has always been grunting in tennis.  When they are young they are coached to breathe through their mouths and make these sounds to help them relax.  it has always been that way and the men do it too. Sharapova makes it awful and annoying and so did Monica but it will always been around.  As pressure rises so does the screams both men and women.

  15. I play tennis and I think that it's justified.  It's basically why some men and women make noises in the gym while weight lifting.  Right after a tough serve or what have you, a player might "un-tense", if you will.

  16. I agree

  17. confine it to the bedroom thats what i say!!

  18. it helps to release all the power built up and it makes all their hits that much stronger. think about martial artists. they yell or "grunt" when they do throws do make them more powerful.

  19. I think the women should save it for the next generation business, and the men should also save it to make the women not feel like they're left our n the hardcore action

  20. I think it has been there a while but more and more players are doing it, and it is a lot louder now. Maria Sharapova recorded a grunt of 101 decibels (the same as a car horn) in a Wimbledon match in 2005, don't know if anyone has exceeded that since, but it all just seems to be a way to intimidate other players.

Men do do it but i think they do just grunt, whereas a lot of the women make kind of squealing noises which can be very off putting.

I don't mind it if it is genuinely because they are playing a tough point and are really having to put a lot of effort in, but on every point? It's just not necessary!

  21. It hasn't krept in it's always been there. I started in the 70's and you were taught to do it. MOST men do it and so do most women. You don't see a lot of recreational players do it. Maybe that's why there are more recreational players than pros. If your not grunting, your not trying.
