  1. They're to express the different pitches when your singing

  2. they are the notes that preceed so la tee dooo!

  3. It is for different pitches when singing..like on sound of music..they turned those words into songs..It helps when remembering the pitches of songs in music :)

  4. It's called the solfege method.  They represent the different intervals on the major scale.  So if you are starting from C, the do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do equals C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C.  But the minor scale has different intervals and so in the Key of C Minor they would be: do, re, ri, fa, so, le, ti, do.  Which equals C,D,E flat, F,G,A flat, B, C.  Sometimes people call so, sol.  You use them to help you remember the pitch between the intervals.  So if you are looking at sheet music of When the Saints Go Marching In, but you don't know the tune all you have are the notes.  You can sing the notes as these words like: do, re, me, so... do re me so...do re me so etc.  And you'll know how high to sing so because you know how much higher it is then do.
