  1. Nothing horrible, just some problems with crime as there is in any country in the world. A wonderful place to visit. Scary stories are overdone.

  2. what i find to be scary about it is that, well the people dont have a lot of money right? so the things they do for survival.

stealing, bets, gambling, mugging, traffiking, kidnapping for ransom etc. thats what a lot of the crimes here come down to..things done in the struggle for survival. but here in mexico you dont hear about stuff like a serial pedafiles raping little girls and cutting them up in their basements. because that stuff happens more in the u.s, in mexico, its stuff people do for money.

  3. For the most part...nothing!  It really depends though because Mexico is a fairly large country.  The "bad" cities to avoid for Americans and that most Mexicans avoid is Tijuana, Nuevo Laredo and sometimes the capital, DF.

There has been a lot of talk going around that Americans have been mugged/raped/kidnapped recently and I'm not sure how much that is true.  I know that it happens, but one only needs to use common sense, like always, to avoid these bad things from happening.

    Here's my advice:

    (1) Avoid bad neighborhoods that are run-down, not well-lit and if you are in one alone...get out of it ASAP!

    (2) Don't walk alone!  Especially at night.

    (3) Don't get drunk and night and try walking to wherever you are staying alone!

    (4) Know some Spanish and do not accept anything from people whom you do not trust.

    (5) Be patient.  In most towns and smaller cities the "manana attitude" is pervasive.  Nobody is in a rush.

    (6) Never drink tap water.  Don't wash fruit/vegetables in it.  Yu can boil it and then use it, but it won't taste the best.  But a lot of city water in the U.S. doesn't taste great either!

    (7) Don't refer to yourself as "americano" and don't taste offense to being called "gringo."  It is just a part of the culture and really doesn't have to do with race, most of the times.  Depends if you really act like a stereotypical "gringo"...if you know what I mean.

However, most Mexicans are very friendly and will try to help as much as they can.  Most Mexican are considered to be living in "poverty", however most live happy lives.  Mexico is not perfect, but it is a beautiful and friendly country overall.

  4. Scary stories like what?

    Hollywood Movies?

    or Lou Dobbs stories???

  5. I thing that what is so bad in my country is the lack of education. That is the reason of poverty. Period.

But, about "horrible" or "scary" stories; that is not the actual life. Okay, there is some violence, but mostly those are "gangs wars", between them and/or the police or the army. Regular people (as myself) have regular lives; not as different as it is in USA. But there are many poor guys (mostly low educated) that try to go to USA to make their "american dream". The true is that if those guys had education, they could live here as the same as in USA (maybe with less money, but life is cheaper here). We still beeing more mexicans here than in USA, in statistics from USA they say there are about 12 million mexican living there, but they even count those born in there!. That is a kind of lie. Mexicans leaving the country are less.

You got a good answer before this from Anzi86. And, yes, we will call people from USA as "gringo" always, because "american" is anybody from this continent, either canadian, mexican, argentinian or gringo (fro example). The spanish word for people from USA is "estadounidense" (Estados Unidos means United States), but that word is to long, so we say "gringo"; it is NOT offensive, that is just the word; don't call yourself "americano" it DOES offend us, we are not europeans or africans, we ARE americans. It doesn't help "northamerican" either, Canadá is northamerica and so does more than the half of México too.

  6. Mexico is not horrible at all. Truly it is one of the most amazing places in the world. There is a little bit of everything just like here in the USA. People are afraid of change and difference and Mexico is a lot different from America. Just some people do not understand how people can live a different way than we do here in the USA. Mexico is just like the USA was, only a hundred or so years ago. People have a true since of respect, and a hard days works is just the way of getting by. It is true that the cities can be dangerous, but for most parts it is a wonderful place to live. I live in the mountains in a very rural area. It is on the edge of the jungle, and it is beautiful. Waterfalls run crystal blue, caves that glow and the grass is so green. Fruit is plentiful and roses grow wild. Sometimes it is hard for me to believe that a place not so far from the US can be so completely different but wonderful!

  7. My grandfather still owns a Parcel in Mexico (somewhere in Mexicali). I went there once, before my grandfather became senile & feeble, and it's boring. It's a rural area with very few families.

He has citizenship so he moved his family to Southern California for a better life. He moved back in 1980s and it's a dump now.

It used to be inhabited Russian, Irish, and Chinese farmers. They have all fled.... The city is now a resting stop for South Mexican indians and Central Americans trying to cross the border. :-\ .
