  1. Take neat notes. Don't write all over the place. Use a pencil as opposed to a pen. Mechanical pencils are quite useful. Get a heavy duty binder with lots of durable pockets, and divide it into different sections for anything you think you will need, such as tests, notes, handouts, etc.

  2. First thing off is get organized. make t0-do lists and reminders

(your pen or your computer your choice. and a good thing for studying is do it in increments

  3. Have a backpack with different compartments. Devote one pouch to pens, pencils, highlighters, white-out, etc. Always have a notebook or some paper on hand AND your textbook(s). Nothing is worse in the eyes of a teacher than an unprepared student.

As for studying: I buy tons of index cards. I use them to make flash cards to use when studying. I either use them for dates and definitions, or to organize subject matter. It really helped me with my Anatomy and Physiology class since there were not only terms. but different body systems to memorize.

For a study area: make sure it's well-lit and there's no noise (unless music helps you concentrate. It helps me). Make sure you have a clear space to work on. No desk? Buy a lapdesk (can be bought at Staples or even Walmart). They're a good investment and enables you to work on your couch rather than a hard kitchen chair.
